Chapter 14

THERE WERE A LOT of different kinds of monsters I could have encountered. And I got lucky. They turned out to be three-foot-long woodlice. Lots of legs and antennae, and small fangs. The only way they could kill a victim was to knock them off their feet. And then, given how many of them there were, they would tear the victim apart quickly. But as it stood, the would-be massacre just became an endurance marathon, and thanks to my high level and artifacts, I had stamina in droves.

I ran in unhurried circles, periodically stopping to cut down monsters who were charging forward. These enemies didn’t seem to have brains, and they made no attempt to split up, surround me, or block my path.

Once I’d fully settled in and understood their (lack of) tactics, I threw my first fireball. Well, “fireball” was a little generous... More like a fire ping pong. An inch in diameter. The idea had been to hit several monsters at once, but that didn’t happen. Then I tried another way: I decreased the power of the fireball, but increased its size to three feet. Hey! That was much better.

Two woodlice immediately doubled over and died. Three others started squealing, having received varying degrees of burns.

After a few more experiments, I settled on keeping the size of the fireball to a bit less than five feet. I probably could have killed the enemies with a sword faster, but where else would I find a training ground like this to use my only attack spell?

The battle took over half an hour and left about 200 twisted, charred, or chopped up bodies, all level 5. And purely because I was a portal jumper and had the bonuses that came with that, my invisible experience bar had probably increased tremendously. But the tournament was tomorrow already, and I definitely wouldn’t get to level 11 before then. Although... I get experience for winning against opponents there? Not likely. They wouldn’t actually be dying. But I could definitely grind my abilities.

As I mulled all this over, I swung my pickaxe methodically, chipping away pieces of enriched crynite.

I collected 40 pounds in total.

Congratulations! Exclusive quest: Mine a vein of enriched crynite. Complete.

Your strength has increased.

Strength was always a good thing to improve, even more so when it was free. The guild’s dungeon had unexpectedly become somewhere I could seriously advance. Here, I outperformed the average champion. The system saw this and gave me exclusive quests. I couldn’t get that otherwise. But maybe that was for the best.

It was a shame this would be my last visit to this level of the dungeon. After I got the next rank, I would only be able to go to the next level. And I might not be a big fish in a little pond anymore, or I’d get quests of a completely different complexity. Well, I’d have to wait and see. In any case, I still had the Rogues’ Guild to get to, and they had their own dungeon, too.
